Start with four leather categories
Separate supplier-identified natural leather, coated or finished leather, bonded/reconstituted leather, and synthetic leatherette. Record the face, backing, adhesive, pigment and treatment rather than relying on a marketing word such as vegan.
PVC and chlorine-containing vinyl are blocked. Unknown faux leather, coatings, adhesives or composite layers remain not verified—do not process until current supplier SDS/TDS and exact machine guidance resolve them.
Shortlist by operation and envelope
For identified natural-leather cutting and engraving, CO₂ is the primary research path when edge quality, panel size and batch layout matter. P2S and P3 represent two enclosed CO₂ area tiers in the stored evidence.
Vision Pro and Vision represent enclosed blue-diode research paths for documented leather workflows, especially when engraving or smaller cutting tasks fit. A diode listing does not establish every hide, coating or thickness.
Qualify the finished product
Define acceptable edge darkening, residue, odor, dimensional tolerance, fine-detail contrast and cleaning method. Qualify samples from the same supplier lot and construction on the exact candidate machine.
Do not copy universal settings. Settings depend on source, optics, leather construction, thickness, focus, air assist and intended result; start only from current model guidance and a controlled test plan.
Price smoke control and cleanup
Include the manual-compliant exhaust or filtration path, filter replacement, bed cleaning, masking or fixturing, rejected pieces, operator cleanup, odor management and maintenance. These costs can matter more than a small difference in machine price.
Keep continuous supervision, a clean bed and the manufacturer fire controls in the workflow. Do not bypass an interlock or improvise ventilation to rescue an unsuitable room.
Who should choose neither
Choose neither when the leatherette is unidentified, PVC or chlorine may be present, the coating/adhesive remains unknown, the exhaust path cannot be supported, or the product economics depend on unqualified cycle time.
Outsource cutting or marking until the material record and acceptance criteria are stable. A successful mark on one sample does not prove a different color, backing or supplier lot.
Do not laser PVC leather or unidentified faux leather. Obtain the exact product identity and current supplier documentation; a broad PVC-free claim may still leave coatings, adhesives and backings unresolved.
