Shortlist by sign family

For verified clear PMMA faces and letters, CO₂ is the primary research path. xTool P3 offers the largest stored CO₂ work area in the current EtchCompass evidence set; Reno65 Pro Vision and P2S occupy a similar 600 mm-wide cabinet tier; Polar Lite is a smaller enclosed CO₂ option. Vision Pro belongs only where its documented diode process fits identified wood or dark opaque stock.

This is an evidence-based working set, not a hands-on ranking or a claim that these are the only machines on the market. A candidate qualifies only if its exact regional configuration, usable area and controls fit the intended sign.

Start with substrate and finish

Separate clear, translucent and opaque acrylic; solid wood and engineered panel; painted or laminated stock; coated metal; and bare metal. Record every film, paint, adhesive and laminate because those layers can change both compatibility and emissions.

Acrylic cutting, wood engraving, coating removal and direct metal marking are different operations. If a sign catalog spans them, the defensible answer may be two process families rather than one compromised machine.

Measure the production envelope

Use finished dimensions plus clamping, margins, registration marks and nesting waste—not the product photo or nominal sheet size. For pass-through or conveyor work, confirm supported width, thickness, indexing method, enclosure state and the repeatability needed across segments.

A longer advertised feed does not prove a large sign can be aligned, cut and finished within tolerance. Qualify the real stock and artwork on the exact configuration before accepting production orders.

Compare the whole cycle

Time material inspection, artwork preparation, loading, focus or camera setup, cutting or engraving, unloading, cleaning, assembly, finishing and packing. Finished signs per shift cannot be inferred from maximum head speed or a best-case one-pass claim.

Add rejected panels, masking, fixtures, extractor filters, coolant where applicable, maintenance labor and downtime reserve to the installed-cost model. A larger machine earns its premium only if the product mix uses the extra envelope or workflow.

Who should choose neither

Pause when the substrate or coating is unknown, the sign exceeds documented feed geometry, the process requires defeated protection, or the exhaust and fire-control path cannot meet the manual and local requirements.

Desktop fiber and MOPA markers can support qualified plaque marking; they are not evidence of sheet-metal cutting capability. Outsource incompatible work until a separate controlled process is justified.

Do not laser unknown plastics, laminates, paints or adhesive films. Obtain the exact supplier documentation and machine-specific guidance before processing.
