Best for
- Small metal parts
- Asset and batch identifiers
- Buyers separating decorative and traceability work
Watch for
- Color marks vary by alloy and finish
- MOPA is not automatically deeper
- Regulated marking needs its own validation

Define the mark before the machine
State whether the job needs surface contrast, annealing, coating removal, material removal, human-readable text, a barcode or a data-matrix code. Then define the exact substrate, finish, smallest feature, field size and durability requirement.
A vendor sample may establish feasibility, but production qualification should use your parts, data, fixtures and inspection threshold.
Conventional fiber versus MOPA
Conventional fiber can be sufficient for many repeat metal marks. MOPA adds adjustable pulse behavior that can expand process control on selected alloys and finishes, but that flexibility only earns its premium when a validated requirement uses it.
Do not equate a color demonstration with durable traceability, or a maximum depth claim with your finished part.
System and workflow requirements
Check lens/field size, Z clearance, autofocus method, fixture datum, rotary need, enclosure or controlled-area design, extraction and file/data software. Smaller fields can support finer focus but may not fit the part or fixture.
For serialized data, also control duplicate prevention, readable character rules, code verification and record retention outside the laser itself.
Who should choose neither
Do not proceed when the substrate or coating is unknown, the required durability test is undefined, the field cannot contain the part and fixture, or an open system cannot be controlled.
For regulated medical, aerospace, automotive or safety-critical identification, obtain the applicable customer, quality and regulatory requirements; this guide does not certify a process.
A decorative sample is not traceability validation. Qualify the exact part, mark, code and inspection method.
