Bare stainless steel
Conventional fiber and MOPA fiber are the primary research paths for direct bare-metal marking. MOPA adds adjustable pulse behavior that can support specialized contrast or color exploration, but outcomes depend on alloy, surface finish and parameters.
Do not describe a mark as engraved, annealed or permanent without defining and testing the required result. Depth claims remain material- and configuration-dependent.
Coated, painted and powder-coated blanks
A diode or CO₂ workflow may remove or change an identified coating while leaving the base metal largely unaffected. That is a different process from direct stainless marking.
Obtain the coating identity and SDS/TDS. Unknown coatings, adhesives or films stay not verified because thermal decomposition can change the hazard.
Machine characteristics that matter
Compare wavelength/source, lens and field size, Z clearance, rotary support, enclosure or controlled-area design, extraction, fixture repeatability and software/data workflow. A larger marking field may trade against spot size and does not guarantee better code quality.
For tumblers, record the coating, diameter, length, taper and handle clearance before choosing a rotary configuration.
Safety and validation boundary
Laser interaction can create metal and coating emissions. Follow the exact manual and material documentation, use the required enclosure or controlled area, and route exhaust or filtration as specified.
For regulated or safety-critical marking, use the customer and regulatory qualification plan. EtchCompass does not certify corrosion performance, code grade or mark durability.
If the grade, finish or coating is unknown, stop. A broad stainless label does not establish material or fume compatibility.
