Identify the sheet and every layer
Record manufacturer, product/SKU, fiber type if available, weight or thickness, dye, metallic or plastic coating, laminate, print process, adhesive and backing. A cardstock name is not a chemical description.
Unknown laminated paper, foil effects, pressure-sensitive stock and printed coatings remain not verified until the supplier and exact-machine documentation support them.
Choose the documented process
Trotec and Epilog document cutting and engraving selected paper, cardstock and cardboard. CO₂ is the main research path for production cutting, while selected enclosed diode systems may support exact paper products.
The process decision still depends on cut quality, discoloration, detail, work area, hold-down and registration—not a generic material checkbox.
Treat fire control as a hard gate
Paper ignites easily. Follow the exact manual, keep every run continuously supervised, keep the bed and exhaust path clean, and use the manufacturer's approved fire-response procedure.
Do not increase unattended batch size, disable detection or interlocks, or improvise airflow. Stop if stock curls, lifts or sustains flame.
No universal settings are provided. Paper, machine, lens, table, air and design geometry all change the result and fire behavior.
Control movement and registration
Thin sheets can move under exhaust or air assist. Use only a supported table, hold-down or vacuum workflow that preserves controls and keeps hardware outside the beam path.
For printed products, qualify camera or registration-mark accuracy, distortion compensation, cut order and waste rate on representative sheets.
Reject unknown and unstable stock
Reject or outsource when coatings, laminates, adhesives or inks are unknown; the sheet cannot stay flat; smoke deposits make output unacceptable; or the fire and extraction plan is unresolved.
Qualify each new supplier lot before committing to finished-product volume. A paper project example does not validate every cardstock.
