Choose the documented process

Epilog documents slate coaster engraving, while xTool documents stone-engraving workflows on selected systems. These sources support continued research for identified products; they do not prove every natural or engineered stone is compatible.

The usual prosumer objective is a visible surface interaction. Do not translate a marking example into a claim that the machine cuts stone or creates structural depth.

Identify the complete product

Record supplier, product identifier, stone or slate type, country/lot if available, dimensions, surface finish, sealer, paint, resin, adhesive, backing and any food-contact claim. Obtain current SDS/TDS or treatment documentation where relevant.

Engineered stone, resin-bound products, unknown composite tiles and coated promotional blanks remain not verified until every constituent and the exact laser process are supported.

Plan geometry and handling

Measure thickness variation, bow, roughness and product-to-product size. Confirm focus range, head clearance, fixture stability, bed load and camera-registration limits for the exact machine.

A pass-through is not permission to operate with controls defeated. Follow the current manual and system-class conditions for oversize work.

Control damage, debris and finish variation

Qualify a sample for contrast, edge chipping, cracks, spalling, inclusions, tonal banding, residue and cleaning damage. Wear and contamination controls must follow the exact product and machine documentation; do not improvise airflow or protective equipment from a generic guide.

Never leave the process unattended. Keep the bed and optics maintained, and stop if the product behaves differently from the qualified sample.

No universal power, speed, pass-count or coating recipe is provided. Use exact-model documentation and controlled samples.

When to reject or outsource

Reject or outsource when the stone is unidentified, contains unknown resin or coating, cannot be held flat, produces uncontrolled fracture or debris, or lacks a defensible emissions path.

For customer memorials or irreplaceable pieces, qualify a matched sacrificial sample first and document approval criteria. A successful coaster does not validate a different mineral product.
